Signs You May Need Furnace Repair or Replacement

You Hear Unusual Sounds - If your system is making strange noises you have not heard before, turn it off and call for an inspection. Screeching noises can mean the blower has worn out, while banging or grinding noises can mean the unit has broken internal components. In all cases of strange noises, it is more than likely your furnace will require repair or you will need a furnace replacement immediately.

Systems Age - The average lifespan of a heating system is 15 to 20 years. If your furnace is in this age range, it is in your best interest to start shopping for a new one. The cost of repairing an older system can be significantly more than purchasing a newer system. A newer unit will operate more efficiently and be less expensive to maintain. A new furnace also adds value to your home and can save you money in the long term.

Increased Heating Costs - If you notice a steady increase in your energy bills or a drastic difference in your bills this year compared to last year, your furnace is the likely culprit. Higher bills are often a sign that your furnace is straining to keep up with the demands put on it. In this case your furnace may need a relatively minor repair, but it could also turn into a big expense if you ignore it.

Dry & Dusty Home - Your furnace does more than keep your home warm, it also keeps the air clean. Your furnace has an air filter that removes airborne particles including dust mites, pet hair, and other substances. When the filter is dirty, it is unable to capture dust and those particles instead circulate throughout your home. The air filter in your furnace needs to be changed regularly as having a dirty air filter puts unnecessary wear and tear on the heating unit. If the filter is not changed for a long time, the damage to the heater could be beyond repair.

Frequent Repairs - Furnaces often break down the most during the last two years of their lives. Keeping an older, inefficient furnace is not worth the cost in the long run when you have the option of having a newer energy-efficient furnace installed. Consider the cost benefits of replacing the unit instead of having it repaired a few times a year.
